Five Generations

Five Generations

Andy and Marnie Carlson, residents of Decorah, hold the town near and dear to their hearts. Andy is a 5th generation on his dad’s side and dates back all the way to the first Norwegian immigrant, Ole Valle, who settled in Decorah on his mom’s side. Andy illustrates his pride for Decorah by serving on the city council. His wife, Marnie, explained some of her favorite aspects of the town.

“I love all the outdoor recreation that Decorah offers year-round, from biking or cross country skiing on the Trout Run Trail to hiking through the trails at Van Peenan Park, ice skating at the basketball courts, and canoeing or kayaking by breathtaking bluffs on the Upper Iowa River.”

“One of my favorite parts of living in Decorah is the fact that for a small town far from a big city, there is no shortage of art and culture. I especially love the fall Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour and the late winter Oneota Film Festival at Luther College, as well as Nordic Fest in the summer and exhibits offered at the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum.”
